Split Negative Technique with Free As A Bird

Have you tried the Split Negative Technique? It is a great way to create two cards and show opposite colours side by side. The basic way is to use black and white with a symmetrical image, but once you have the idea you can change up your colours and types of images.

Today I am using the retired Free As A Bird stamp set and Early Espresso on Vanilla for the colours.

Tips:

  • The most important part of this technique is to ensure that both images are cut exactly the same. Using a stamp positioner is the best way to line up the image in the same place on each piece of cardstock. See below for my video on how to do the technique with a stamp positioner.
  • Stamp the image with Early Espresso ink and then Versamark ink on Very Vanilla cardstock and heat emboss with Clear Embossing Powder.
  • Stamp the image on Early Espresso cardstock with Versamark ink and heat emboss with White Embossing Powder.
  • Die cut one of the embossed images with a Nested Essentials Die. Line up the negative of the die cut image with the other panel to make sure that both images line up and die cut the second image.
  • Cut both panels down the centre and attach the opposite pieces to each other with a piece of Tear & Tape.
  • Emboss Crumb Cake panels with the Timber 3D Embossing Folder and attach to Thick Very Vanilla card bases.
  • Stamp a sentiment with Early Espresso ink on Very Vanilla cardstock and die cut.
  • Attach a split bird image and sentiment on each of the cards. Offset them as in the above photos.
  • Supplies:
    • Stamp Set: Free As A Bird, Charming Sentiments
    • Cardstock: Thick Very Vanilla, Very Vanilla, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso
    • Ink: Versamark, Early Espresso
    • Accessories: Timber 3D Embossing Folder, Nested Essentials Dies, Clear & White Embossing Powders

… inside and envelope is the same for both cards
